What is sex therapy?

In order to understand sex therapy, you must understand the discipline. This clinician is a sex therapist and is in pursuit of a PHD in Clinical Sexology. Sexology is defined as the study is the scientific study of human sexuality, including human sexual interests, behaviors, and functions. The term sexology does not generally refer to the non-scientific study of sexuality, such as social criticism.

Sex Therapist apply tools from several academic fields, such as anthropologybiologymedicinepsychologyepidemiologysociology, psychotherapy, and criminology. Topics of study include sexual development (puberty), sexual orientationgender identitysexual relationships, sexual activities, paraphilias, and atypical sexual interests. It also includes the study of sexuality across the lifespan, including child sexualitypubertyadolescent sexuality, and sexuality among adults and the other aging populations. Sexology also spans sexuality among those with mental or physical disabilities and traumatic sexual experiences to include victims of sexual deviances. The sexological study of sexual dysfunctions and disorders, including erectile dysfunction and anorgasmia, are also areas of study and treatment. 

While the client and counselor discuss intimate and sexual topics, they do not engage in any sort of physical contact or sexual activity at any point. Sex Therapy is Talk therapy!
